Travelling with a baby means more items and less patience for sorting them at security. Two things are worth knowing before you pack.

Formula and milk are exempt — wash products are not

TSA treats baby formula, breast milk, toddler drinks and baby food as medically necessary. They may exceed 3.4 fl oz in reasonable quantities for your journey, and they do not need to fit in the quart bag.

You must declare them at the start of screening and expect additional inspection. Ice packs to keep them cool are also permitted.

What is not exempt is everything else — baby shampoo, body wash, lotion, bubble bath. Those follow the normal 3-1-1 rule like any other liquid. This trips up a lot of parents who assume anything labelled "baby" gets a pass.

The bath-time list

  • Hair and body wash — one gentle product rather than separate shampoo and soap
  • Body lotion — unfamiliar water and air conditioning are drying
  • Barrier cream — nappy rash is more likely when routines are disrupted
  • A few wipes in an accessible pocket, not buried in the case
  • Sunscreen formulated for children, if relevant

That is four or five liquids competing for a quart bag that also has to hold your own things.

Bathing a baby somewhere unfamiliar

The practical problem is that you have two hands and both are already occupied. Anything requiring you to put the baby down, find a second bottle, and open it is a genuine hassle.

This is where a dual-chamber bottle earns its place — hair and body wash on one side, lotion on the other, so you flip one cap without letting go of anything. It is keratin-enriched with a light fruity scent, tested to be gentle for all hair and body types.

Practical tips that help

  1. Pack the baby's liquids in their own bag. Faster to pull out and declare.
  2. Keep formula separate from the quart bag entirely, since it is screened differently.
  3. Bring one more feed than you think you need. Delays happen.
  4. Do not open duty-free liquids until you reach your destination.
  5. Take a familiar scent. Bath time in a strange bathroom goes better when something smells like home.

For the whole family

If you are travelling as four, the Family Travel Kit covers adults, men's and baby products in four bottles rather than eight, in one waterproof bag. More on packing for a family.
