A gym bag works best when it is packed once and left packed. Here is what earns a permanent place.
The seven essentials
- Flip-flops or shower sandals. Non-negotiable. Communal shower floors are a reliable route to athlete's foot and verrucas. This is the item people skip and regret.
- Shampoo and body wash. The core of it. One dual-chamber bottle covers both in a single item, which matters when you are packing at 6am.
- A quick-dry towel. Microfiber packs smaller and dries faster than cotton, which is the difference between a fresh bag and a musty one.
- Deodorant. Solid rather than aerosol — it will not leak and it is welcome in a shared changing room.
- A full change of clothes. Including underwear and socks. Putting the sweaty set back on undoes the shower.
- A waterproof bag for wet kit, so it does not soak everything else.
- Moisturiser if gym showers leave your skin tight. Often overlooked and cheap to solve.
What to leave out
- Full-size bottles. Heavy, bulky, and you will use a fraction of them before they leak.
- A hair dryer. Most gyms have them, and yours will not fit.
- Anything glass. Tile floors and glass are a bad combination.
- Strong fragrance. Shared space. Keep it modest.
The bag-packing principle
Every item you have to remember is an item you can forget. The most reliable gym bag is one where the toiletries never leave it — a dedicated set that lives in the bag permanently, separate from your bathroom at home.
At $9.99 for a bottle covering two products, keeping a duplicate set in the bag is a cheap way to remove a recurring decision from your week — and US shipping is free however small the order.
Gym shower etiquette, briefly
- Keep it short. Others are waiting.
- Wear something to and from the shower.
- Take your bottles with you rather than leaving them on the ledge.
- Rinse the cubicle if you have left hair behind.
