Where that number comes from
A typical shampoo dose is around a tablespoon — roughly 0.5 fl oz. At that rate a 3.3 oz bottle gives about six washes. Most people use less than they think once the lather is going, which is why the practical range lands nearer 7–10.
Halve the dose, which is realistic for fine or short hair, and you are past twelve washes.

Conditioner runs out differently
People often assume conditioner runs out first because it feels heavier. In practice it usually lasts longer, because it goes on mid-lengths and ends rather than the whole head. If you are packing a fixed amount of each, shampoo is the one that limits you.
This is worth knowing if you are decanting: fill more shampoo than conditioner, not equal amounts.
The two-week trip question
The instinct on a longer trip is to size up. Resist it — anything over 3.4 fl oz cannot go in a carry-on, and checking a bag to transport shampoo is a poor trade.
For most people a single 3.3 oz bottle genuinely covers two weeks. If your hair is long and thick, take two, or plan to buy locally. Shampoo is available everywhere.
How to make it last
- Wet hair thoroughly first. Shampoo lathers far better in fully saturated hair, so you need less of it.
- Emulsify in your palms before it touches your head, rather than dropping a blob on your scalp.
- Wash the scalp, not the lengths. The ends get cleaned by the runoff.
- Skip the second wash unless your hair is genuinely dirty. One is usually enough.
A note on bottle count
