Most toiletry bags are packed for a version of the trip that never happens. Here is a list built around what people actually use.

The non-negotiables

Whatever the trip length, these earn their place:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Body wash
  • Moisturiser or body lotion
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Any prescription medication
  • Sunscreen, if you are going anywhere with sun

That is seven items, and four of them are liquids competing for space in the same quart bag.

A weekend

Two or three days needs less than you think. One shampoo and conditioner bottle, one body wash, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant. That is it. Hotels cover the gaps, and 3.3 oz is far more than you will use in three days.

A week

The list barely changes — the quantities do, slightly. A 3.3 oz bottle of shampoo comfortably covers a week for most hair lengths. Add lotion, because a week of air conditioning and airline cabins is drying. If you are travelling as a pair or a family, this is where carrying four separate bottles each stops making sense and a shared kit starts to.

A month or more

Counterintuitively, do not scale up. Pack the same travel sizes and buy what you need when you arrive. Shampoo exists everywhere. Carrying a month of toiletries means checking a bag, and checking a bag to transport shampoo is a poor trade.

The exceptions are things that are genuinely hard to replace: prescription medication, a specific product your skin reacts badly without, and contact lens solution in a brand you trust.

What to leave at home

From experience, these get packed and never opened:

  • Hair dryer — almost every hotel has one
  • Full-size anything — it will not be finished and it cannot fly in a carry-on
  • Face masks and treatments — the aspirational item that stays sealed
  • A second perfume — one is enough
  • Nail kit — unless the trip is longer than three weeks

The one habit that helps most
