They are safe to use. Hotel toiletries are regulated cosmetics like anything else. The question is not safety, it is whether they suit your hair — and for a lot of people they do not.

Why hotel shampoo often disappoints

Hotel amenities are bought on cost and shelf stability at enormous volume. That tends to produce formulas that are:

  • Strongly cleansing, because a formula that leaves everyone feeling clean generates fewer complaints than one that leaves some people feeling greasy
  • Lightly conditioning, so the conditioner rarely does much for dry or long hair
  • Heavily fragranced, which is a problem if you are sensitive

If your hair is short, robust and low-maintenance, none of this will bother you. If it is long, curly, colour-treated or dry, a week of hotel shampoo is usually noticeable.

Most chains have moved from miniatures to refillable wall dispensers to cut plastic waste, which is a good change environmentally. Practically it means you cannot check what you are using, cannot take any with you, and are relying on housekeeping to refill correctly.

When hotel toiletries are genuinely fine

  • One or two nights
  • Short or low-maintenance hair
  • A business trip where you shower and leave
  • You are checking a bag anyway and would rather not carry more
  • Upper-tier hotels, which often stock genuinely good branded amenities

When to bring your own

  • Colour-treated hair — harsh surfactants strip colour faster
  • Curly or dry hair that needs real conditioning
  • Sensitive skin or scalp, or fragrance sensitivity
  • Trips longer than about three days, where the cumulative effect shows
  • Anywhere you are not certain there will be amenities — short-term rentals, hostels, guesthouses

The cost of not relying on them
