Tea tree oil is a scalp ingredient, not a hair one. It is an essential oil distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, an Australian shrub, and it is included in shampoo for what it does to the skin under your hair rather than to the strands themselves.

What it is used for

  • Flaking and dandruff. Its best-known use. Tea tree has recognised antimicrobial properties, and much dandruff is associated with a yeast that lives on the scalp.
  • Itchiness. Often improves alongside the flaking.
  • Oiliness and buildup. Helps a scalp that feels congested feel clearer.
  • The clean feeling. A large part of why people like it.

What the tingle actually is

That cooling, slightly prickling sensation is the oil's volatile compounds acting on nerve endings in the skin. It is not a measure of how well the product is working, and a stronger tingle does not mean a better result. It is simply what the ingredient feels like.

What it will not do

Tea tree does not condition hair, does not repair damage, and is not a hair growth treatment despite frequent claims. If your scalp is healthy, it will mostly just smell medicinal and feel cool.

Who should be careful

  • Sensitive skin. Essential oils are a relatively common cause of contact irritation. Patch test if you react easily.
  • Very dry hair. Tea tree formulas often lean clarifying, which can leave dry lengths drier. Condition thoroughly.
  • Colour-treated hair. Clarifying formulas can accelerate colour fade.
  • Never apply undiluted. Neat tea tree oil on skin can cause significant irritation. In shampoo it is already diluted, which is the sensible way to use it.

Persistent flaking, redness or soreness is worth taking to a doctor or dermatologist rather than treating indefinitely with shampoo. Tea tree is a comfort ingredient, not a diagnosis.

How to get the most from it

  1. Work it into the scalp, not the lengths — that is where it acts.
  2. Leave it for a minute or two before rinsing.
  3. Condition mid-lengths and ends separately, since the scalp treatment does nothing for them.
  4. Alternate with a gentler wash if your hair starts feeling dry.

Where we use it

Tea tree sits alongside shea butter, keratin and collagen in our 15.2 oz shampoo and conditioner — tea tree working on the scalp, the others on the hair itself.
